Following on from a meeting with Conwy County Borough Council representatives at the leisure centre, we are now in the position where we can start planning a phased return to training. Whilst the meeting was positive in terms of moving forwards, in these early days we have been given strict limitations on the number of people we can invite onto the track at any one time.
The leisure centre has stipulated a ratio of 6 athletes to one coach with a maximum number of 30 people (to include coaches) at any one time. This has given the committee the unenviable task of deciding which groups we invite back in the first wave. It has been decided that for now, the return of the development group (Linda and Mike) will have to be delayed until we have increased capacity at the track. As a committee, we have agreed that training should initially comprise the sprint group and middle-distance group with an agreed figure of 12 athletes in each group. This would give coaches scope to be able to train athletes safely and effectively within a Covid secure environment. It is anticipated that we may be able to have the first wave on track as early as Monday 27th July although this is subject to having the relevant risk assessments completed and agreed. Attendance on the 27th would be strictly by invitation only.
The selection of the athletes will be at the discretion of the coach but priority will be given to club members who train at a high competition level. Selected athletes will be contacted individually by their coach. We do recognise that this will cause disappointment amongst our athletes who may not have had the opportunity yet to compete but please rest assured we are working hard to look at alternative solutions to this. We are also hopeful that restrictions are constantly being reviewed and that the current limits within which we are operating may relax further.
In the meantime, athletes are reminded that they can book onto the track individually in the daytime and weekend mornings via the leisure centre’s online booking. Covid-19 has thrown our training and competition year into turmoil however at the foundations of the club it is making us stronger as we are endeavouring to use this time to evolve the club and look at new, fresh ways of delivering training particularly to our younger athletes. As a committee, we are still hopeful that the day will come when we are ALL back on track.
