Fantastic weekend at National Championships

The weekend of June 15th and 16th saw Wrexham’s Queensway Stadium hosting the annual Welsh Junior Athletics Championship with over 500 athletes from across Wales striving to win a Welsh Champion’s medal.

24 club athletes from Colwyn Bay Athletic Club entered a range of events and delivered fantastic performances, bagging a total of 11 medals including; 3 Gold, 7 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Notable performances came from Holly Roberts (U20W) and Bryn Woodall (U17M).  Holly won a Gold in the 1500m and a Silver in the 800m.  Bryn took gold in the 1.5k steeplechase and a Silver in the 3000m.  Sacha Didcote gained a double Silver for her performances in the U17W 300m and 200m sprints.  Other medal winners were; Ffion Mair Roberts (Gold – 400m, U20W), Roman Hodgson (Silver – 800m, U15M), Tomos Land (Silver – 1500m, U20M), Moli Jones (Silver – 100m U20W) and Alex Roberts (Bronze – 800m U17M).

Crispin Backshall, coach at Colwyn Bay AC said ‘I’m so pleased with all the performances of all our athletes this weekend.  There were many athletes, particularly in the younger age groups competing in the Welsh Championships for the very first time, overcoming nerves, gaining personal bests and experiencing the buzz of competing at a national event’.  He adds ‘central to the weekend, it was great to see the club athletes of all ages supporting and encouraging each other and just genuinely loving their sport’

Colwyn Bay Athletics Club trains on a Monday and Wednesday (18.45-20.00) at the Zip World Stadium at Eirias park, Colwyn Bay.  New members are always welcome.

Currently, the Club is hoping to recruit volunteers to join their coaching team.  Crispin adds ‘relevant training would be available via the club offering the suitable candidate a rewarding opportunity to gain skills and experience in athletics coaching via a structured development pathway.
